What is Hot & Cold Stones Therapy?
The healing properties of stones have been used by humans since ancient times. Basalt stones which have been collected from volcanoes are used because of their heat retaining properties and natural smoothness and cold stones are used for their cooling and decongestive properties.
What happens during a hot & cold stone therapy?
The Basalt stones are placed in a special oven where they are heated and maintained at a therapeutic level. You will be made comfortable on a massage couch where only the part of the body being massaged will be exposed. Warm oil is massaged into your skin, followed by massage using the hot stones. The heat from the stones and the massage skills of the therapist result in deep penetration into the muscles thus enhancing the therapeutic effects. Cold stones may be used to aid circulation and reduce inflammation.
Chakras
The stones may also be used to balance the chakras. The word chakra is an ancient Sanskrit word meaning wheel. Chakras are thought to be non physical energy centres which spin near the surface of the body linking the physical body to the energies of the subtle body. There are seven main chakras which are also referred to as lotus flowers. Like lotuses chakras have petals which increase in number from the base to the crown chakra, symbolising a path of development to full blossom. Chakras can be open or closed, dying or budding depending on their state of consciousness. If the chakras are blocked discomfort or disease may ensue. Balancing the chakras stimulates the free flow of energy which promotes good health and vitality.
