What is Aromatherapy?

Essential oils are made up of tiny organic molecules which have unique qualities that may have a relaxing, soothing, uplifting or stimulating effect. Some oils possess antibacterial, antimicrobial & antiseptic properties. They are derived from a wide source of vegetable substances, including trees, shrubs, flowers and grass. Almost every constituent is used to produce the oils. Oils may be massaged into the body, used in baths, oil burners or added to cosmetics.

What happens during a treatment?

Following a thorough consultation a unique blend of essential oils is selected. You will be made comfortable on a massage couch where only the part of the body being massaged will be exposed. Various massage techniques are used to suit individual needs. The treatment may be adapted to include acupressure and lymphatic drainage techniques. A patch test may be necessary for clients who suffer from allergies or have particularly sensitive skin.

Where does it originate?

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years. The earliest records of the use of essential oils are 5000 years old. Egyptian stone inscriptions illustrate how the people of the Nile Valley prepared the oils, balsams and fermented liqueurs. The Egyptians were the first to use the method of infusion to extract the oils and were considered to be experts in herbal preparations, ointments and cosmetology.
In 1928 the French Chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse accidentally discovered that lavender could heal the skin and prevent scarring, after burning his arm. He coined the phase 'aromatherapy' and went on to research the medicinal uses of essential oils. Madame Marguerite Maury, a student of Gattefosse's introduced aromatherapy into Britain in the late 1950's. She combined the use of essential oils with massage and developed a holistic approach by selecting oils to suit the physical and emotional needs of the client.
