What is counselling and psychotherapy?

Counselling aims to assist individuals explore and overcome short and long-term conflicts, deal with present traumatic situations or address thoughts and feelings, which may at times prove overwhelming.
All services offered are strictly confidential

Why do people need counselling?

People enter Counselling and Psychotherapy for a variety of reasons: It may be in reaction to an event in ones life such as bereavement, loss or separation from an important relationship which may be difficult to face alone. Or it may be that issues such as addiction or repetitive patterns of behaviour intrude into your life preventing movement and personal satisfaction. Perhaps you feel depressed, anxious, tired and lonely or suffer from poor self-image that can make even everyday activities seem difficult.

Some examples of issues that may be addressed through counselling:

  • Bereavement, loss or separation
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Disturbances related to trauma
  • Poor self image and self esteem
  • Eating Disorder e.g. over eating, bulimia and anorexia
  • Repetitive behaviour patterns
  • Difficulty relating to self or others
  • Sexual, physical and emotional abuse
  • Addiction

How long do sessions last?

Sessions last 50 minutes, usually once a week. It is a talking therapy in a neutral, safe and confidential environment. I usually suggest an initial course of 6 sessions depending on the depth of the issue and then we will review progress together.

How much does a session cost?

The fee is £45 a session for individuals and £60 for couples with some concessions available on request.

Specific areas of counselling:

Relationship Therapy

"I also offer relationship therapy for couples that may have found themselves in difficulty. Perhaps communication has stopped or there is tension around the way you are in relation to each other. Life events and circumstances may be putting a strain on your relationship. I work with couples to increase awareness of such issues that may be resulting in a negative patterns of behaviour. Again I aim to provide a safe and neutral environment to allow this exploration."
Issues for couples may include:
  • Communication patterns
  • Power and control imbalances
  • Life events or circumstances
  • Sabotaging or destructive behaviour
  • Sexual issues

Psychosexual Psychotherapy (sex therapy)

"My particular approach focuses on the sexual issue but also looks at the whole person or couple as I believe that sexual issues usually do not occur in isolation. Issues include: loss of desire, premature ejaculation, vaginismus (difficulty with penetrative sex), painful intercourse, erectile dysfunction, arousal difficulties and inorgasmia (difficulty achieving orgasm). Whilst I do work with individuals, if in a relationship it is often more beneficial to see the couple together. In my experience, working out the way in which you relate and communicate often uncovers awareness around the sexual difficulties and vice versa."
