What is Swedish Massage?
Massage has been used for thousands of years. A Chinese text dating as far back as 3000 years BC explains the body was stroked to prevent colds and other ailments. Hippocrates the Father of Medicine alive 460 to 359 BC recommended "a scented bath and an oiled massage everyday" The use of massage in the pursuit of health and wellbeing has been unbroken in Eastern cultures since the first references were made. However, Per Henrik Ling, an eighteenth century Swedish Physiologist is responsible for increasing the popularity of massage in Europe. Ling developed the massage movements effleurage, petrissage and tapotement known as the Swedish massage technique which produces a firm and effective massage of the muscles of the body.
What happens during a treatment?
You will be made comfortable on a massage couch where only the part of the body being massaged will be exposed. Following the application of cream or oil the soft tissues of the body are manipulated which has a positive effect on all the systems of the body. Advanced techniques such as trigger point therapy or soft tissue release may also be incorporated to alleviate particular problems caused by tense or strained muscles.

How many treatments are recommended?
One treatment will definitely be beneficial bringing to you a sense of wellbeing and producing some physical benefits where required. However best results come through having between 4 - 6 treatments at weekly intervals allowing the therapeutic effects to build up cumulatively, producing long-term benefits. Thereafter monthly treatments are recommended to maintain optimum health and wellbeing.
